How Does Beach Dance Work?

During an event, each person is equipped with a waterproof iPod and headphones that have been synched with an identical playlist of songs.  After pressing the play button simultaneously, participants listen to a variety of music that’s been especially created to make movement inevitable, unavoidable and utterly delightful. This technology makes it possible for dancers to have the freedom to move about the beach and in the ocean while still being connected to the rest of the group.

One of the things that makes Beach Dance so engaging and enjoyable is the fact that there are no “right” steps to learn.  No previous dance experience is necessary. The only steps you need to follow are your own.  While safety considerations, technological tips and guidance are provided before each event begins, minimal instruction is given.  Participants are encouraged to dance how they feel not how they think or have been taught.

Before every dance, I help ease apprehensions and instill confidence by creating a space that’s welcoming and comfortable to all participants.  After brief instructions and introductions, every event begins with an intention and ends with a sharing circle.  Whether it be a poem, a quote or a few wise words from yours truly, I promise to provide a bit of sweet inspiration you can take into your dance and take with you after the event concludes. Of course, the natural beauty that surrounds you, the variety of music that’s played and how you choose to move will also create your own extraordinary dance.

Due to the unique listening experience and specific timing of when the dance begins for everyone, being on time is of utmost importance.  Being fifteen to thirty minutes early is highly recommended to insure you have enough time to find parking, complete a liability waiver and receive instructions on how to work your iPod (if it’s your first time) and to secure one of the forty spots available.  After 9am, late-comers are welcome to join us in the dance, however iPods will not be distributed after this time. You are welcome to bring your own iPod and dance to your own music.

When and Where Does Beach Dance Happen?

Beach Dance events are held at 9am every Sunday. Please check the schedule of upcoming events on the home page.  Events are approximately 90 minutes in length and take place at Po’lenalena Beach Park (Secret Beach) in Wailea.   Specific directions to the meet-up location are given at the time one inquires about an event.

What Else Do You Need To Know?

Beach Dance events are kept at a maximum of forty people and waterproof iPods are given out on a first-come, first-serve basis.  In order to ensure a spot for an event, participants are encouraged to arrive 30 minutes prior to our start time of 9am.

There is no cost for the events.   Events are open to men and women of all ages and children over the age of twelve are welcome with parents’ permission.  No special attire is needed and you’re encouraged to bring your own water bottle.

Whether you live in Maui or you’re visiting the island, I hope you’ll join us for a dance soon.  Until then, you can stay connected by subscribing to the monthly Beach Dance newsletter, getting blog post updates via email, hanging out with us on Facebook or contacting Lila directly.
