A short sabbatical for Beach Dance

by Lila on April 23, 2015

On May 4, I’ll be having knee surgery.

I’m a bit nervous about it. I’ve only had surgery one other time in my life and because it occurred when I was two years old, I don’t remember anything. I won’t remember much of this surgery either so I’m told. I’ll be under anesthesia for about an hour while the doctor removes the torn pieces of my meniscus that have been causing considerable havoc within my knee the past two years.

The good news is after a few days rest I should be up and about and feeling better.  The docs encourage movement as soon as possible to minimize blood clots and muscle atrophy. I’d be out dancing the day after surgery if I could, but I know my body will need to rest. Being still is one of my life’s greatest lessons and this short sabbatical will give me an opportunity to do just that.

And so, Beach Dance will be taking a three week break from May 1-22.  I’m looking forward to this Sunday’s dance (April 26) which will be the last one before my surgery. I anticipate May 24 is when Beach Dance will be back.

I am so grateful for all the musicians in the world who create songs I can dance to and share with others.  I am so grateful for all the people who have experienced Beach Dance here on Maui the last three years as well as everyone who danced on the shores of Cannon Beach, Oregon where it all began eight years ago. I am grateful for my health, my beloved husband, James, my family and friends, my work and art, my life.

If life is but a dream, this sure is a good one.
